How To Make A Graduation Cap Out Of Money

If you're looking for a fun and creative way to requite cash to a graduate, this might just fit the bill!  In the past few years, I've made a few money chain gifts for some grads like I first showed on the blog hither, but I decided to go for something a piffling different this twelvemonth and endeavor my paw at a graduation cap!  Since Abby is at present home from college, I enlisted her assistance and, together, we came up with this 1!

It was really piece of cake to make and we had all the supplies we needed on hand in the firm! Here's what yous'll need to make this:

  • A 9-inch square piece of cardboard
  • 21 bills in the denominations of your pick.  (Nosotros used twenty $1 bills for the height and bottom of the chapeau, plus one $20 nib for the tassel.)
  • clear record
  • Poster board (we used a metal gilt from Hobby Lobby)
  • i canvass of tissue paper
  • thin ribbon or cord, approximately 24 inches long

Starting time past cutting the paper-thin to a nine-inch foursquare.  (Nosotros recycled some cardboard from some packaging, which worked perfectly.)

Side by side, tape on the start dollar bill with a small piece of tape on each end of the bill.

Tape on the next bill by overlapping it about halfway beyond the beginning.

Continue taping on the bills in a clockwise direction, all around the edges of the paper-thin.  End by adding two more bills in the middle, as pictured.  Then, repeat the same process on the other side of the paper-thin so both sides are completely covered by the bills.

Side by side, mensurate out and cut the poster lath for the cap to approximately 24 inches long past three i/2 inches wide.

And so, tape the ring together to the size y'all need for the graduate's head. Nosotros had to guess the size, but twenty inches turned out to be just right in our case.

After the band is taped to the right size, employ scissors to cut slits around one inch long and spaced well-nigh ii inches apart, all around ane side of the band.

And so, gently fold the tabs in and then record the band onto the under side of the greenbacks-covered tiptop.

Next, it's time to brand the tassel!  It only takes ane piece of tissue paper, measured approximately thirteen inches wide by 24 inches long.  Fold the tissue in half, lengthwise, then fold once more from top to bottom two times to make information technology easier to cut the strips.

Cut the strips around one inch wide, stopping around 2 inches from the folded top, and so open the tissue again.

Adjacent, start rolling it up the eye.

Then, fold the tassel in one-half, placing the ribbon or string in the centre.

Use the last bill to wrap around the top of the tassel and apply another piece of tape to secure the end.

Add a small tag with the graduation year onto the ribbon, then necktie a small knot near the top of the tassel and record the ends of the ribbon onto the tiptop of the cap.

Add together 1 more "push button" on top of the cap fabricated from a circumvolve of the poster board.  Tape information technology on over the ribbon, and it's finished!

It makes a great gift for the grad to wear, and is sure to put a smile on their face!  Considering who doesn't want money for a grad souvenir?!!

This whole projection can exist done in less than an hour, and is lots of fun to make!  I hope this gives y'all the inspiration you're looking for!  For free graduation printables and party ideas for the Class of 2017, click here!
